Winning SNG Poker Strategy

authorHow to play poker February 3, 2009

Sit N Goes, or SNGs for short, can be a very profitable way to make money playing poker, if you know the right strategy and how to be disciplined.  Without the right strategy and bankroll management, you could keep going broke and have to redeposit over and over again.  Learn what is the right winning SNG strategy to help you win money playing poker.

Winning SNG Poker Strategy

According to Phil Hellmuth, tight is right.  When you play poker according to Phil Hullmuth’s rules, you will be playing very few hands but you will be paying premium hands.  And anyone that is not paying attention to how many or how few hands you are playing will get a surprise when you show them the nuts over and over again and they keep paying you off thinking you don’t have it.

When you apply this to the proper SNG strategy, you will not be playing a lot of hands but you will do well in the long run.  You will sit back and wait your turn for your big hands and pounce and abuse the bubble and take down SNG after SNG.  You have to know the right moves and when to push all your chips in with any two cards.  And there is a time when this is the proper winning strategy that you can use and abuse your opponents who may or may not know what you are doing.  Even if they do know what you are doing, they cannot stop you if you have more chips than they do and can bust them before you make money.

If you have a 10% ROI, which is very attainable, and play 100 $50 SNGs, you could win $500 net profit.  Plus, you also need to include rakeback which would add another $135 to your profits.  These are net profits, not winnings.  Because it does not matter how much you win, what matters is how much you get to keep after all is said and done.  If you multi table, you could play 20-50 SNGs a night and make hundreds of dollars each night.

While proper winning strategy may be boring and unexciting to some, it is the way to long term profits.  And that’s why you want to play poker, to make money.  So follow the tight strategy and you will bring home the money more often.

I need a cure for fancy play syndrome

authorHow to play poker October 20, 2008

Hello-

Just busted from the $25 rebuy on Cake poker in 27th place when I had an above average chip stack because I keep sabotaging my own efforts by trying to make fancy plays like I see being done either on TV or on the Poker X Factor videos where the pros resteal with marginal hands and it works like a charm.

So I make a move with 6d9d from the big blind against an early position raiser and end up losing about half my stack with puts me on life support and it’s just downhill from there.

Why do I keep doing this over and over again late in multi table tournaments where the money is starting to matter more?

And what sucks is that I make the laydown with A9o when getting about 2-1 on my money and then make a donk move like that with the crappy 69s.

Other times I do it when I have a big stack and make marginal calls with hands like KJ and call the short stacks.  It doesn’t take too many beats before your big stack becomes a medium or small stack.

It’s frustrating that you play for 3 or 4 hours and start making the money and then you keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

And I was thinking about it, this is not really the style I play - I don’t play laggy and resteal that often so why do I try and make a move with a hand like 69s from out of position?

Whereas if I just play more of a straightforward way which is how I was able to get into a above average chip position in the first place I would probably have better results.

It’s like I have the Mike Matusow blowups that I do to myself that keep me from winning.

No more fancy plays!

End self rant.

Good luck at the tables.
